A short summary

The play takes place on Sunday in a Midlands town, in a one-room flat of Jimmy and Alison Porter, who are the main characters, and centres on their marital conflicts. Jimmy is a working class man and Alison a colonel's daughter. the upper class representative. He ridicules and himiliates her because of that, showing that lower classes are as smart as the uppers. The play is about Jimmy's cruelty, a liberal, who criticizes evverything - the upper class, Sunday newspapers, emotional apathy and wages his rage on his wife Alison, who patiently tolerates it all and doesn't strike back because she loves hin and understands his anger. At one point she has enough and leaves him, but returns to him at the end when we finally see some genuine feelings between them.
